These Engagement Ring Trends Are Losing You Money
When you follow bridal jewelry trends, chances are they will be out of style in five years. The risks of following trends can lead you to throwing away thousands of dollars on redesigns over the years. Here's how to avoid the trap and design a timeless engagement ring that evolves with your style.

Why Trendy Engagement Rings Cost You More Long-Term
Here’s the reality: engagement ring trends change every 5–7 years. In the early 2020s, bridal jewelry focused on ultra-skinny diamond pavé bands, high-set center stones, hidden halos, clustered diamonds, and a preference for gemstones such as morganites and black diamonds.
Today in 2025, only 5 years later, engagement ring trends have completely shifted-
Here is a breakdown of what's in:
-Oval cut diamonds and sapphires
-Teal sapphires (especially in vintage-inspired settings)
-Petal prongs
-Minimalist engagement rings with wide bands
These trends dominate Pinterest and Instagram — but they’re not forever. And five years from now? The trends will shift again. So, this leads me to my number one engagement ring tip as a jeweler.
#1 Tip! Design A Timeless Engagement Ring and Leave the Trends for your Wedding Band
I always recommend designing a simple engagement ring and saving the trends for your wedding band. Take the solitaire style, for example: it’s a classic, minimal design that pairs well with almost any type of wedding band.
In the image below, we’ve paired the solitaire ring with various bands—cluster style, floral chevrons, Art Deco design, and even a modern twist—and it always looks great.

I started my career redesigning engagement rings, and with every new client, I began to notice a pattern. The two most common reasons clients came to me for a redesign were that they were unhappy with the original design their partner had chosen, or they felt the ring looked outdated.
This is why we recommend saving the trends for your wedding band. It’s a more cost-effective option, and you won’t lose any of the sentimentality or memories that the engagement ring holds.
Real Costs: Wedding Band vs. Engagement Ring Redesign
-A custom wedding band typically costs $800–$2,000.
-A full engagement ring redesign (reusing your center stone) often starts at $2,000 and up.
It costs less to purchase a new wedding band every decade than to redesign your engagement ring. Within the same price range, you’ll also be able to keep the original band—perhaps to wear on another finger or save for special occasions.
How to Design a Timeless Engagement Ring
Here’s how I help clients create timeless rings they’ll love for decades:
1) Start simple: A center stone on a plain band
2) Add details thoughtfully:
-Do you want shoulders or a clean band?
-Should the stone be set high or low?
-Round or square shank?
-Which diamond or gemstone shape feels most "you"?
3) Incorporate subtle trends via hidden or side details like:
-Hidden halos
-Petal prongs
-Profile engraving
These details make your ring feel unique — without being too over bearing and noticeable. The more exaggerated and trendy the details, the quicker it will feel dated.
Timeless vs. Eccentric
The one caveat to this rule is eccentric designs. Oftentimes, I see styles fall on a spectrum: from minimal to trendy to eccentric. I always recommend that clients stay on either end of that spectrum—because just as minimal designs age well, so do truly eccentric ones.
I create a lot of bespoke pieces for clients, and I’ve learned that when a design is far from the norm, it tends to be more genuine and personal. When it’s not influenced by trends, it reflects the client’s authentic self—and that kind of uniqueness means they’re far less likely to grow tired of the design.
Our Floral Art Deco Collection: Bold Meets Romantic
Take our floral and Art Deco engagement ring collection. It’s bold, expressive, and not for everyone — and that’s exactly the point.
When someone chooses a ring from this collection, I know they’re connecting with it on a personal level — not just following a trend.
Final Thoughts: Invest in the Sentiment, Not Just Style
Choosing a simpler engagement ring gives you:
-A flexible foundation for styling
-Lower long-term costs
-A sentimental heirloom you’ll never feel the urge to replace

Let your wedding band be the place where your personality shines and evolves. It’s a much more cost-effective way to stay on trend.
